ZKA, EUFISERV sign deal for wider card acceptance in Europe

May 10, 2007

BERLIN - ZKA and EUFISERV have signed a deal that allows EUFISERV members to provide ATM withdrawals to German debit cardholders and ZKA members to provide the same benefits to cardholders in Brussels.

According to a news release, the deal allows both organizations to extend the reach of their respective card schemes - one of the requirements of the single euro payments area requested by the European Commission and the European Central Bank.

Approximately 16,000 EUFISERV ATMs in Spain are slated to be the first to become open to new cardholders under the deal. Under earlier agreements between the Italian banks and ZKA, German debit cardholders can already access cash from ATMs on Italy.

Similar deals between EUFISERV, ZKA and other card schemes in Europe are expected this year with several of those cooperating schemes expected to create an alliance to form the Euro Alliance of Payment Schemes. The alliance will enable cardholders of European banks to use their cards POS terminals and ATMs across Europe.

"EUFISERV is delighted to be working with ZKA to make it a reality," said Petter N. Johansen, EUFISERV's managing director. "EUFISERV acquirers are now able to acquire German debit cards at their ATMs, if they wish. In addition, EUFISERV cardholders will be able to use their cards at effectively all ATMs in Germany. This, together with the attractive conditions, will provide banks with a great incentive to add the EUFISERV brand to their portfolio of card products."
