Another ATM reprogrammed to dispense 20s instead of ones

July 15, 2007

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Last month, a man and a woman reprogrammed a Triton ATM placed by Cardtronics at Mastrorocco's Market in Pittsburgh to dispense twenties when it should have been spitting out ones. The theft netted $1,540 over the course of two days, officials say. Security cameras showed that the robbers didn't have to do anything more than use the keypad to reprogram the device. The scam is similar to one that made the news in the fall, when a Tranax Technologies ATMat a Virginia Beach, Va., gas station was rigged. That case was notable because it was discovered that the ATM manual was available online; it listed default administrative passwords that many ATM owners presumably had not changed.
