Training your techs: An expense that pays off

September 11, 2013 by atm Atom — blogger, atmatom

Technician training isn't a cost, it's an investment. And like any solid investment, when you put funds into maintaining or increasing the proficiency of your service team, you'll see positive returns:

Faster service calls, fewer technicians. Because a trained technician knows what to do and doesn't spend all day doing it, they can perform a task an estimated six times faster than one not trained.

Fewer service calls. When you can send a trained technician on a service call, they'll not only do the job faster, as noted above, but they'll also get the job done right the first time. And they will be astute enough to spot other maintenance issues, potentially saving a future emergency call.

Fewer parts used. We've all been there and seen the way untrained techs have to swap parts in and out of a machine to get it up and running.

Parts are expensive, freight is expensive. Time is money. Can you afford to have your ATM down? Can you afford to have your customer or soon to be ex-customer's ATM down?

How many unnecessary $300 parts overnighted to a site does it take to pay for a $500 training class?

Free advertising. Good news travels fast, but bad news travels even faster. Word gets out quickly if your tech struggles to get a customer's ATM operational. Word of mouth is how many companies acquire new customers — or lose prospective ones

It's your image, your reputation. Why risk a potential stumble?

Loyal employees. Training is a great way to show your employees that they matter, that you place trust and confidence in them, and that you want them to stay with your organization.

Being trained often feels like a promotion to an employee. When the word is out that your company trains and stays current on products, you'll find it much easier to recruit and retain quality talent — and new customers.
