MUMBAI, India - State Bank Group, India's largest ATM network, launched its 5,000th ATM on March 18.
SBI is the largest bank-owned ATM network in India, running on an ACI Worldwide BASE24 transaction switch. SBI started its offline ATM deployment in 1992. In 2001, the BASE24 switch was implemented, with 250 ATMs.
More than 4,100 individual Bankmaster branch systems are connected to the switch and issue ATM and debit cards. In addition, 1,500 branches are centralized on a core banking system that also is connected to the switch.
That connectivity allows SBI account holders to access their accounts throughout the country.
Until March 2003, SBI had less than 200,000 ATM transactions per day. Today, the bank has approximately 1 million transactions a day.
