The South African Reserve Bank plans to overhaul its cash infrastructure and payment system, including a white label ATM network, according to a report by Briefs.co

By March 2027, it plans to consolidate its cash network from 109 facilities to 40 to 50. The white-label ATMs will handle withdrawals, deposits and account inquiries.

Alongside physical cash reform, the SARB is aggressively promoting digital transactions via its real-time platform, PayShap. By opening access to non-banks and standardizing user experience, the SARB aims to boost fast payment usage from one to 15 transactions per person monthly, targeting 500 million monthly PayShap transactions by 2029.
