MasterCard pushes PayPass in Canada

TORONTO - MasterCard Worldwide has partnered with Giesecke & Devrient to provide Canada with its PayPass card and technology. MasterCard says the new system provides a convenient and more secure payment options.
 
According to a news release, cardholders with a PayPass-enabled MasterCard pay by tapping their cards on specially equipped point-of-sale terminals.
 
Introduced to Canadians in 2004, PayPass continues to grow in its popularity and is embraced by consumers, card issuers and major merchants, including Citibank, President's Choice Financial, Tim Hortons, Petro-Canada, Rabba Fine Foods, Cineplex Theatres, and Coffee Time, MasterCard says. And McDonald's Canada recently announced plans to make PayPass available in its stores beginning in 2008.
 
"G&D offers the innovation to allow Canadian consumers a convenient and secure payment experience," said Anna Rossetti, president of Giesecke & Devrient Canada.
