European ATM operators prepare for new €10 banknote

December 9, 2013

The most recent newsletter for ATMIA Europe included a European Central Bank update on plans for the introduction of the new Europa Series €10 banknote. ECB has also circulated a news release with dates and information that European ATM operators will need to carry out the changeover to the new notes.

The European Central Bank and the national central banks of the euro area — i.e., the Eurosystem — have launched a Partnership Program to help banks and others prepare for the introduction of the new €10 banknote, which will be unveiled on Jan. 13, 2014, and issued later in the year.

Under the Partnership Program, the Eurosystem will:

  • provide partners with tools and materials to help them prepare for the introduction of the new banknotes;
  • communicate extensively about the need to adapt cash-handling machines and authentication devices to the new banknotes; and
  • distribute leaflets about the new banknotes to points of sale across the euro area at the end of June 2014, ensuring that cash handlers have ample opportunity to prepare for their circulation.

    Users of banknote authentication devices and handling machines will need to contact the suppliers or manufacturers of that equipment in order to prepare it for the new €10 banknote. Those who plan to purchase a device or a machine should check with suppliers to ensure that it can be adapted to accept the new banknotes.

    Lists of banknote authentication devices and handling machines that have been adapted to accept the new €5 are available on the ECB website. The lists will be updated in early 2014 to include information on equipment that accepts the new €10 banknote.

    Further information about the new banknote is available under the Partners section of the site. This section provides information on updating banknote equipment and will include details of testing opportunities with the new banknotes.

    "ATMIA Europe welcomed the new rules as significant numbers of ATMs in the euro system along with bank branch cash equipment and kiosks will require upgrading to accept and dispense the new bank note," the Europe chapter newsletter said.

    The newsletter provided key dates in the euro note introduction process:

    Dec. 9, 2013 — Banknote handling equipment manufacturers may conduct testing of the new banknote produced in test print runs on the premises of the national central banks.

    Jan. 13,  2014 — The new €10 bank note will be unveiled at ECB headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany, and the date of launch will be announced. From this date, BEMs, service suppliers (such as cash in transit companies) and retail banks will be able to borrow bank notes from seven full-scale printing runs.

    Post-launch, 2014 — ATMIA Europe will join the ECB partnership program and will keep members updated via the association's European webpages. The newsletter said that ATMIA Europe would post further updates later this month.
