The European ATM Security Team and LiquidNexxus co-hosted the first Financial Crime & Security Forum June 13–14 in The Hague, welcoming more than 100 law enforcement officers, industry fraud and crime prevention specialists, and forensic analysts to the international event.
According to an EAST write-up about the forum, Europol set the scene with a keynote address stressing the importance of international cooperation, a theme that was repeated throughout the two-day conference.
Presentations discussed the benefits of regional card blocking and the future of ATMs for contactless cards and NFC mobile acceptance.
TMD Security and CELT Ltd. examined skimming in detail, and the Bundeskriminalamt addressed the threat of compromise to the EMV chip. Automatia presented a case study on physical attack prevention in Finland.
Additional sessions covered cross-border prosecution and asset recovery issues, as well as a U.S. Secret Service presentation on combating high-tech and financial crime. REMA shared the Russian experience with malware and cyber-security threats, while NCR provided a case study on reverse engineering attacks.
In the closing presentation, HSBC demonstrated how a global bank with more than 22,000 ATMs has taken an effective and holistic approach to ATM security.
Organizers from EAST and LiquidNexxus said that, as a specialist event, the FCS Forum would probably be held on a bi-annual basis to keep it "fresh and relevant." The next form is planned for June 2015.
