Bank ATMs move toward Check 21

InformationWeek:Major U.S. banks are rolling out imaged-enabled ATMs that scan checks and cash, eliminating the need for envelopes. Diebold, NCR and Wincor Nixdorf are all deploying the technology to the likes of Bank of America, Chase and Wells Fargo. But deployments will be gradual and selective, because of the expense of the machines, says TowerGroup's Jerry Silva. For example, Wincor Nixdorf, which supplies Wells Fargo, sells the new ATMs for about 20 percent more than a standard ATM, which can cost between $20,000 and $30,000. Rather than replacing all 200,000 bank-owned ATMs currently in operation in the U.S., financial institutions are likely to target only certain high-traffic areas for the new ATMs.
