ATMIA releases new ATM Fraud Survey

June 20, 2012

The ATM Industry Association (ATMIA), the non-profit association for the global ATM industry, today announced the release of a new ATM fraud survey conducted among its members.

The survey focuses on identifying current and emerging threats to ATM security with a view to providing security alerts and, if necessary, new security best practices. "Ninety-four respondents in the field of security completed the survey and there were some revealing results," said Mike Lee, CEO of ATMIA.

Skimming emerged as the biggest ATM security threat, followed by physical attacks and, in third place, cyber attacks. "Overall, the survey indicated the sense of a moderate increase in ATM attacks so far in 2012 and showed an increased investment by the industry in security solutions," Lee said.

Nearly all respondents (93 percent) said security best practices are either "essential" or "very important" to ATM security. More than half (56 percent) said the industry implements best practice for ATM security most of the time, but 23 percent of said the  industry generally does not adhere to best practices.

"On the whole, the security of ATMs remains world-class — and it has to be to ward off the range of threats it faces," Lee said.
