EMV transition: How would you grade ATM brands?

March 1, 2013 by Corey King — Sales, American Bank Equipment

Trying to understand all the ATM compliance acronyms is kind of like trying to decipher cell phone text abbreviations. Figuring out ADA, EMV, PCI, and others can be every bit as confusing as picking up a teenager's cell phone and trying to make out what SMH, HBU and LOL mean!

Do you know what path your ATM brand has set for EMV compliance? Do you know what that will mean for you?

Working with service providers offers a unique way to gauge the "temperature" of different brands in terms of EMV readiness. I've observed the following about these major ATM brands:

NCR —According to their EMV brochure, "All NCR SelfServ ATMs delivered since January 2011 are EMV hardware (EMV Level 1) compliant."

Regarding the Personas line (i.e., 58xx)  "NCR has delivered EMV Level 1 compliant dip card readers since 2007, and optionally for IMCRW (motorized) variants since their introduction with Personas (circa 2003)."

The brochure adds that older models "50xx, 5303/5/7, 56xx, 5840 and 5870 Lite are not upgradeable."

In discussions with five different service companies about EMV compliance, all were knowledgeable about what was needed and were active in offering upgrades — or at least setting something up! There are ample manufacturer and third-party solutions to ensure that NCR ATMs will be EMV compliant in advance of upcoming deadlines

Diebold — According to their EMV Brochure, "All the chip card readers provided by Diebold are EMV Lev 1 compliant and certified. Diebold EMV Lev 1 card readers have been available since the introduction of EMV. The majority of Diebold's installed base is already equipped with a Lev 1 card reader. The oldest terminals have already been upgraded with EMV Lev 1 card readers."

One service partner commenting on their knowledge of Diebold's EMV migration plan said, "Only thing I have heard is that no fix will be EMV or Windows 7."

I was not able to get as much conclusive information as I wanted, but if ADA is any measure, those with Diebold ATMs are wise to go directly to Diebold for information and clarity.

Triton — The responses I got from Triton service guys I deal were similar to comments about ADA upgrades, namely, "It's all covered and not complicated." One shared these excerpts from a Triton press release:

If a new unit is ordered with the optional EMV card reader, Triton will activate EMV before the unit ships. If an EMV card reader is added to the product later, the customer will be required to active EMV from the field.

Even with the EMV card reader installed and EMV software activated, the ATM will continue to support magnetic stripe cards and otherwise function exactly as Triton ATMs installed in the field currently do with v3.1.

Once the customer's host processor has certified EMV software and is ready to support EMV transactions, EMV can be enabled at the Triton ATM.

"Having Triton products ready for EMV gives our customers an edge in the industry," says James Phillips, V.P. of sales and marketing. "We want to provide customers the opportunity to purchase an EMV option on new units now in an effort to keep their upgrade costs lower down the road.

"However, whether they buy a new unit that is EMV ready or update their ATM fleets in the field, our customers will know that when their processors are ready to implement, they won't be scrambling to catch up."

Hyosung — As with Triton, I got a very good feeling from Hyosung partners that EVM migration would be handled smoothly, easily and on time. Partners seemed confident and unworried. "I haven't heard anything definitive, [but] everyone says 'they will be ready,'" one Hyosung partner said.

How would you grade each ATM Brand? If you have ATMs under service, what plan do you have to encourage customers to become EMV compliant now? Remember the craziness of the ADA deadline — it would be good learn from that to get into compliance before supplies tighten up!
