Wincor Nixdorf cites growth in Australia

Independent ATM deployers (IADs) put Wincor Nixdorf AG on the fast track to growth.

March 9, 2011

Wincor Nixdorf AG went down under and in a short time came up looking very good by working with independent ATM deployers.

According to a report released Wednesday by Edgar, Dunn & Company about Australia's ATM market, Wincor Nixdorf controlled 16 percent of the country's installed base of ATMs in 2010 up from 1 percent in 2008, the year the manufacturer entered the country.

As of June 2010, Australia had an installed base of 28,764 ATMs, Edgar, Dunn & Co., a financial payments consultancy, wrote  in its study, "2010 Australian ATM Market Study Report."

"The market share increase to 16 percent is a very significant milestone and demonstrates that as a relatively new entrant in Australia, our technology is accepted and appropriate for the market," said Ricardos Khoury, vice and president and head of banking for Wincor Nixdorf in Asia.

Independent ATM deployers (IADs) put Wincor Nixdorf AG on the fast track to growth, said Matthew Kovac, director of corporate communications Asia for Wincor Nixdorf Pte Ltd in Singapore.

"Wincor Nixdorf, as a newcomer to Australia, started its engagement with independent deployers as they saw the immediate benefit of our technology and experience in Europe," Kovac said.  "This is why our growth has been so strong."

Courting IADs was a smart move by Wincor Nixdorf because according to Edgar, Dunn & Company, independent deployers represented 51 percent of the Australia ATM market as of June 1, 2010.  Financial institutions have expressed interest in Wincor Nixdorf products because of the company's success with IADs, Kovac said.

"There is increasing interest in cash recycling, deposit automation, ATM channel marketing and the need for network upgrades to EMV complaint ATMs due to an increase in fraud," Khoury said. "However, it is important for financial institutions to look at combining these initiatives under wider branch transformation strategy."

The manufacturer sells cash-dispensing ATMs in the Australian market.

The consultancy, which has offices worldwide, said Australia's ATM market continues to grow. Edgar, Dunn & Company projects that the country will have 30,750 ATMs by June 2011 and 38,050 ATMs by June 30, 2015.

"The installed base of ATMs is now projected to grow by 32 percent over the next five years so that most financial institutions are able to provide customers with greater access to banking services through the ATM channel," Wincor Nixdorf officials said in a statement.

Wincor Nixdorf, which is based in Paderborn, Germany, is the world's second-largest ATM manufacturer based on annual shipments.
