Are your ATMs jackpotting bait?

Last year, ATM operators around the world found themselves on the hook for more than $1.2 billion in losses from ATM jackpotting crime.

The numbers add up quickly, given that a single attack might involve 20 to 60 ATMs and result in losses totalling anywhere from $800,000 to $2.4 million.

Last year alone, the European Association for Secure Transactions reported 192 logical attacks against ATMs, which involved 100 banks in 40 nations.

Of course, most of that was before the first known attempt at ATM jackpotting in the U.S. ATM market, which occurred toward the end of last year. And now that this 12-year-old mode of logical attack is here, the loss figures have nowhere to go but up ...

But they don't have to.

ATM operators in the U.S. — and other targeted regions — do have options for defending their ATMs against a wide range of jackpotting attacks that criminals employ to quickly and efficiently empty an ATM of every last banknote it contains.

In a free one-hour webinar on Thursday, April 26, experts from TMD Security will walk you through the various types of logical attacks used in these ATM-emptying exploits.

More importantly, they'll share information with you about the currently available variety of preventive measures, and explain how these can be layered with defenses against physical attack to provide the maximum protection for your ATM fleet — and the profitability of your business.

Tom Moore, Matthias Thiele and Vincent Wong of TMD Security will answer questions that include:

  • What exactly is jackpotting and how is it done?
  • How do malware and black box attacks differ?
  • What are the industry best practice defenses?

The event will also include an attendee Q&A session in which participants can get answers to their specific questions about the risks and methods of protection against all types of ATM attack.

As EMV adoption continues to grow and card fraud becomes less profitable for criminal organizations, ATM operators can expect to see a continued expansion of attempted ATM jackpotting attacks in the years ahead. The time for preparation and prevention is now.
