WINCOR WORLD: Deposit automation, service and software are focus for next 3 years

January 30, 2008

PADERBORN, Germany In spite of fierce competition in the U.S. ATM market, Wincor Nixdorf Internationalsays it is well positioned to have a strong impact on banking in 2008.

Javier Lopez Bartolome, Wincor Nixdorf's president of the Americas, says his company plans to differentiate itself by being the first to identify and act on industry trends, such as deposit automation, that meet consumer needs.

"With automating checks and cash at the ATM, we were in the right place at the right time," he said. "We plan to continue with new and emerging trends we see in the market place. We want to help with branch efficiency, with services that meet the needs of the consumer. And the fact that we have attracted large financial customers in the United States supports our commitment to innovation."

During a one-on-one with ATM Marketplace during the second day of Wincor World 2008, Bartolome and company chief executive Eckard Heidloff offered an overview of how their company expects to have an impact on the U.S. and Asian markets in 2008 and beyond.

Not only will top-tier banks be a focus, but so will community and mid-tier institutions.

"We have technology that the large and second-tier banks are looking for," Bartolome said. "And now we have a countrywide service organization, which includes a presence in 25 states where we have our own technicians. For banks and large companies like Lowe's, this is important. We have the support and service to back up our products."

The lack of a strong servicing presence has long been one of Wincor Nixdorf's weaknesses in the U.S. banking and retail sectors.

In the financial space, Diebold Inc. and NCR Corp. have dominated the market with equipment and service. But 2007 marked a turning point for Wincor Nixdorf. The company made noticeable inroads in sales to U.S. financial institutions. Last year, JPMorgan Chase signed with Wincor Nixdorf for Wincor'S multivendor ProClassic software. A number of smaller institutions followed suit, signing with Wincor Nixdorf for multivendor software solutions.

Bartolome and Heidloff say they expect Wincor Nixdorf's penetration in the U.S. market to continue over the next three to five years.

"We are now seen as a clear No. 3 in the U.S.," Heidloff said.  "We are in a good position, but our plan is to grow slowly and have banks use our machines as part of their mixed ATM fleets, in addition to NCR and Diebold. From there we hope they eventually move to us."

And in Asia, where Wincor holds a No. 5 or 6 position in the banking sector, facing a number of competitors, Heidloff says Wincor expects to have a similar impact. Over the next three to five years, Heidloff said

"For us, Asia is as important as America."
