Washington Mutual charges non-account users at ATMs

The Seattle Times: The party's over for non-account-holders who've grown accustomed to using Washington Mutual ATMs for free. On Nov. 17, the nation's sixth-largest bank, with $323.53 billion in assets, is expected begin charging non-customers to use its ATMs - $1.50 in Washington, California and most other states; $2 in Oregon, Florida, Georgia, Illinois and Nevada. A Washington Mutual spokesperson said the bank estimates its ATMs get 2.5 times more traffic than its competitors' ATMs, partly because of the no-fee policy. The catalyst for change, however, was long lines at the ATM that put some bank customers off.
