Visa extends fraud detection to ATM transactions

May 31, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO - As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen data security, Visa USA Inc. is expanding its fraud-detection capabilities to include Plus ATM transactions. The system integration, which will occur in several phases throughout 2006 and 2007, is part of a broader strategy to enhance the Visa payment system.

"As tech-savvy criminals look for new ways to attempt payment fraud, such as using stolen PINs, our job is to make sure we're staying a step ahead of them," said Jean Bruesewitz, senior vice president of processing and emerging products for Visa USA.

According to a news release, Visa is integrating the Plus network with its primary authorization system to provide real-time fraud intelligence on every Plus ATM transaction. Visa is the only payment company to provide this kind of fraud detection to its ATM transactions.

Visa's Advanced Authorization technology provides an in-flight rating on each transaction's potential for fraud to the financial institution that issued the card, including whether the transaction was part of a reported data-security compromise.

Visa's system integration eliminates the need for FIs to support separate systems for ATM and point-of-sale transactions. Other value-added services and tools such as multicurrency processing and enhanced exception processing also will be available.  Although the separate Plus processing platform will eventually be phased out, the Plus logo will continue as Visa's primary ATM brand.
