Boston Globe: Americans spent an estimated $4.2 billion in ATM fees this year. Although that number seems good for financial institutions, a large number of FIs have found it may pay more to offer customers surcharge-free ATM access. Many credit unions and smaller banks are joining surcharge-free ATM networks to make up for not having a large network of their own, and some larger banks are giving customers the advantage of surcharge-free ATM access as a way to gain market share.
