Orion FCU turns to Bluepoint to fight check fraud

June 4, 2013

Bluepoint Solutions has announced that Memphis, Tenn.-based Orion Federal Credit Union has selected its ImagePoint Teller solution, which the FCU will integrate with Deposit Chek Service from Early Warning in order to reduce check losses and improve service. The solution effectively prevents up to $100,000 in annual losses for both members and the FI by identifying checks with doubtful collectability, Bluepoint said in a news release.

ImagePoint Teller provides a real-time module that can automatically compare account information with the Early Warning national shared database to immediately alert tellers to deposited checks that have a high likelihood of return.

Notifications are issued for accounts with a history of NSF returns, accounts that are closed and other high-risk factors. The solution also helps to improve member service by accelerating funds availability and protecting members from taking losses on checks, Bluepoint said.

"Previously, our tellers were making judgment calls based on the value of a check, utilizing a separate scanner and waiting to receive a decision," said Stuart Harrington, general counsel at Orion FCU. "By leveraging the integration between Bluepoint and Early Warning, real-time return notification is built into the check scanning process, providing the teller with immediate, plain-language information to make a decision to place a hold or refuse the check."

Equally important, Harrington said, is the fact that the system allows the teller to deflect blame from the member to the check, and provides the opportunity for member education, turning a negative experience into a member-focused opportunity.
