Newly formed Gemalto receives card-personalization certification

June 28, 2006

TORONTO- The newly formed smartcard company Gemalto has received certification from the International Organization for Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission for its advanced card-personalization center in Toronto. The announcement was made at Canada's CardWare Conference in June.

According to a news release, Gemalto is the first card personalization center in Canada to receive the ISO designation.

Through its personalization center, Gemalto is assisting Canadian financial institutions with the conversion of an estimated 100 million magnetic-stripe cards to smart cards, based on EMV standards.

The new certification, ISO/IEC 27001, details requirements for information-security-management systems, including security policies, organizational and personnel security, communications and operations management, and business-continuity management.

Gemalto was founded in June, after French card-technology companies Gemplus International and Axalto merged. (Gemplus shareholders own approximately 55 percent of the new publicly traded company. Axalto shareholders own the remainder.)
