Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves recently signed House Bill 1625 into effect, which aims to regulate crypto ATMs. The bill forbids companies from operating a crypto ATM without a license under the Money Transmission Modernization Act and it requires operators to have daily fee and transaction limits. The law will take effect on July 1.
"A virtual currency kiosk operator shall not accept transactions of more than One Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00) in cash or the equivalent in virtual currency for new customers and Seven Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($7,500.00) in cash or the equivalent for existing customers," the law states. "Additionally, for new customers, the transaction limit shall not exceed Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000.00) in cash or the equivalent in virtual currency in the thirty (30) days period after the first virtual currency kiosk transaction with the virtual currency kiosk operator."
It also requires that operators must issue a refund to new customers within a 30 day period if the customer submits proof of fraudulent activity. Operator must give full receipts of any fees and have scam warnings.
"AARP Mississippi is proud to have helped advance this critical consumer protection," AARP Mississippi State Director Kimberly L. Campbell said in a press release. "Crypto kiosk–related scams have caused devastating losses, especially for older adults. This law brings common-sense safeguards that reduce risk, improve transparency, and strengthen accountability."
