Mobile payments have seen significant growth in the UK, with two-thirds of adults reporting that they use mobile payments, according to a study from UK Finance. However, cash usage has remained steady, accounting for 8% of all payments in the country as of 2025.

Mobile payments usage has increased among all age groups, with 84% reporting using it among 16 to 34-year-olds, and 68% among 35 to 44-year-olds. The lowest usage reported was 65+, of which only 22% reported that they used a mobile payment service.

Cash usage declined significantly in 2020, but has remained relatively steady in the U.K., accounting for 3.9 billion payments in the country.

In addition, ATMs show significant usage in the UK, with 49.3 million people reporting using one in 2025. The study expects cash to decline to 4% of the overall UK payments market, but will not disappear completely.
