Forum answers FAQs about US common debit AIDs at ATMs

'Implementing EMV at the ATM: Requirements and Recommendations for the U.S. ATM Community' answers questions about US common debit AIDs.

June 12, 2015

To address questions from ATM deployers about EMV migration using U.S. common debit AIDs, the EMV Migration Forum's ATM working committee has added an appendix to the white paper, "U.S. Debit EMV Technical Proposal."

Deborah Spidle, Paragon Application Systems director of EMV solutions, participated in the development of the whitepaper and was one of the lead authors, a company press release said.

One regulatory requirement facing U.S. financial processing institutions is the mandate to support two payment network options for the routing of POS debit transactions.

To facilitate routing choice, debit cards in the U.S. can be issued with two application identifiers: a payment network AID that is recognized globally; and a U.S. common debit AID.

AIDs represent applications on a chip card and allow the ATM or POS terminal to identify applications that are mutually supported by the chip card and the terminal. Various payment networks have defined their own U.S. common debit AIDs.

The EMV Migration Forum white paper, "U.S. Debit EMV Technical Proposal," provides more information on debit cards and the U.S. common debit AID.

Topics covered in the appendix, "Implementing EMV at the ATM: Requirements and Recommendations for the U.S. ATM Community," include:

  • options for application selection based on EMV standards;
  • a conceptual approach to implementing the U.S. common debit AID;
  • six likely scenarios involving chip cards and chip-enabled ATMs in the U.S.; and
  • options for dealing with EMV-to-non-EMV ATM transaction routing.

"The response to the initial version of the white paper has been tremendous", Spidle said. "With the addition of this appendix, the white paper becomes an even more valuable reference for U.S. ATM deployers."

The EMV Migration Forum EMV Migration Forum will host a July 14 webinar next month to provide a nontechnical review of critical components of the implementation process based on the newly published appendix.
