Raleigh, N.C.-based State Employee's Credit Union has tasked Diebold Inc. with a complete overhaul of the CU's entire fleet of ATMs. A Diebold news release said that when the project is finished, all SECU machines will be Opteva models, 65 percent or more of them featuring deposit automation.
SECU is the nation's second-largest credit union, serving more than 1.8 million members through 248 branches across North Carolina. With 1,120 ATMs in total, SECU can also claim the nation's second-largest ATM fleet.
Because SECU ATMs (branded "CashPoints") are fee-free for both members and nonmembers, the machines experience high traffic and require daily visits to retrieve envelope deposits for processing. The new deposit automation-enabled ATMs will post deposits to member accounts automatically, minimizing the need for ATM runs.
"Diebold's deposit automation technology will help to drastically reduce the frequency of our vendor cash management trips," said Leanne Phelps, SECU senior vice president of card services. "This efficiency will result in significant cost and time savings that will help SECU better serve our members, while delivering an improved consumer experience at the ATM."
The ATMs offer members an intuitive process for cash and check deposits, and provide receipts via email, if desired. According to Diebold, the machines also deliver the industry's fastest transaction time for a typical deposit — handling up to 30 bank notes and 10 checks in less than 60 seconds.
"Transforming self-service deposits into more interactive experiences delivers higher-quality transactions, as well as faster fund availability, for better user experiences," said Mychal D. Kempt, Diebold vice president of North America operations. "Offering automated deposits at the ATM will help SECU transition more branch traffic to the self-service channel, giving tellers more time to focus on value-added transactions within the branch."
Diebold will provide first- and second-line maintenance for the SECU self-service network, and will provide 24-hour support, monitoring SECU ATMs and dispatching technicians as needed.
All of the ATMS will have EMV card readers; as smartcard use increases, SECU will be ready to accept transactions from EMV cardholders without terminal upgrades.
