Conduent Inc. partnered with the New Jersey Department of Human Services to provide chip EBT cards. Available through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Work First New Jersey, these tap-to-pay cards are designed to prevent EBT theft, according to a press release.
By having a chip, these cards are less likely to be stolen through skimming on ATMs and POS devices. In addition, beneficiaries can tap to pay the card at terminals. Users can lock and unlock the cards via the ConnectEBT app or via NJFamiliesFist.gov.
"As thieves increasingly have targeted taxpayer-funded government benefits in recent years, chip-enabled payment technology has emerged as a key tool to reduce EBT theft, improve account security and ensure critical funds go to rightful recipients," Anna Sever, president, Government Solutions at Conduent, said in the release. "Conduent is proud to help states deploy this technology that also offers more flexible, fast and convenient payment options, such as tap-to-pay."
