Common application spec may accelerate EMV migration

ePaynews:Global EMV-migration rates may accelerate with EMVCo's release of its common payment-application specification, which streamlines tests for card security and functionality. The CPA standard appeared only when dual-brand issuers appealed to EMVCo to simplify the certification process. Vendors may not have CPA cards until early 2007, but many issuers are expected to support individual Visa and MasterCard EMV applications in addition to the new CPA.

Almost 80 million EMV-compliant smart cards and 600,000 POS terminals and ATMs were globally issued and deployed from June to December 2005. Though the number of issued EMV cards increased 8 percent from 2004 to 2005, the number of deployed EMV POS terminals dropped about 21 percent.
