CardFlight offers overview of EMV payment trends

July 22, 2016

Payments gateway operator CardFlight has released the latest update to its EMV Migration Tracker, an assessment of the progress of EMV chip card migration within the U.S. payments industry.

According to a company press release, U.S. transaction data from CardFlight reveals that:

  • more than 70 percent of cards used in transactions contain EMV chips;
  • American Express leads the way in chip card rollout, with 94 percent of transactions for the brand coming from cards containing chips;
  • more than 64 percent of CardFlight merchants are now EMV-enabled, more than three times the national average; and
  • 78 percent of CardFlight merchants whose average transaction values are $200 or more are EMV-enabled, compared with 48 percent whose average transaction values are $10 or less.

Data used for EMV Migration Tracker represents a sampling of the hundreds of thousands of transactions processed through the CardFlight payment gateway since the October 2015 liability shift, the company said. These transactions occurred at thousands of merchants in all 50 states between October 2015 and June 2016.

All merchants, including those without EMV solutions, are included in the data to better represent the cards being used, regardless of the merchants' choice to upgrade to an EMV solution.
