Arizona court rules in favor of Western Union in money-transfer case

January 10, 2007

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - An Arizona court has ruled that the state of Arizona does not have the authority to seize money transfers intended for payment in Mexico that originate outside the state, The Western Union Company announced Jan. 10.

According to a news release, the court prohibited Arizona from seizing or attempting to seize future money transfers not sent from or intended for payment in the state.

Western Union president and chief executive Christina Gold said the decision speaks strongly in favor of a consumer's right to send funds without fear of unreasonable seizure.

"We pursued this case in court because we feel strongly about defending the rights of our consumers," she said. "While we believe that the judge made the right decision in this case, we will continue to work cooperatively with the state of Arizona."
