3 ATM bombings, 1 Gryphon

April 9, 2013

Of three recent ATM bombings across the U.K., two ATMs gave up their cash contents to thieves. The third was protected by a Gryphon ATM-protection system by Lockpoint.

Initially designed to beef up cash-in-transit security, the system has also proven effective in defending the ATMs stocked by CITs, said a report by the U.K. publication, North East Business.

The Gryphon system uses a set of four interlocking steel doors designed to protect cash drawers. An electronic control on the device ensures that only one cash access door can be opened at a time.

One of the first buyers of the Lockpoint product in the U.K. was Tesco, NE Business said. The grocery chain chose Gryphon ATM protection out of concern about attacks on its CIT providers. With the device in use, cash losses dropped by 90 percent, while attacks on ATMs declined by 64 percent.

"I am particularly pleased with the dramatic reduction in injuries to cash-in-transit staff, together with the significant reductions in both attacks and financial losses," said Tesco head of security Tim White.
