Bill Belichick is famously known for telling his players to “DO YOUR JOB.” I have long been impressed with the simplicity of that coaching method and the clarity it provides players and coaches. Many sports analogies have been helpful in my career to better understand customer needs, product benefits and market trends. With that in mind, TCRs (Teller Cash Recyclers) have long been a fascination of mine because I really did not understand “their” job nor why some VARs chose to build their business model around it. Why am I sharing this and what does ‘MPG’ have to do with it?
Like all athletes, businesses and products, EFFICIENCY matters and, at the very core, the benefit of TCRs center on efficiency. Did you know that a TCRs job is to improve the efficiency of a Teller and the time they spend with customers? Did you know that a TCRs job is to improve the efficiency of a Branch (opening and closing) and all employees interaction with customers? In this day and age, using time wisely and improving the customer experience are vital for growth and why TCRs popularity is growing.
As no athlete, business or product is exactly the same, it is worth knowing what makes one TCR more efficient than another, better suited for certain branch operations or better equipped to provide the best experience to customers. I like to view these considerations as your TCRs ‘MPG.’ The answer is not subjective and does not reside in the “that’s the way we’ve always done it” mindset. Studying feature benefits, daily process time savings are the very beginning of a worthwhile investigation of this subject. Your ROI is measurable, Time Savings Measurable, Improved Customer Experiences Measurable. So, if you have no TCR strategy, it is fair to say you have a "GAS GUZZLER" model that is limiting what your Tellers and Staff do for your customers. If you do have a TCR strategy, they are ALL NOT THE SAME. How much time in a day, week, month does your TCR save your Teller? How much time does your TCR free up your Staff to discuss products and services offered by your Financial Institution? Does your TCR offer any Self-Auditing capabilities or other advanced (aka fuel efficient) features? The time spent answering these questions will go a long way to much better customer experiences and predictable measurables.
