Windows 7 for ATMs: A long and winding road

Webinar will look at opportunities, obstacles and alternate routes for arriving at a Windows 7 solution for ATMs.

December 2, 2013 by Suzanne Cluckey — Owner, Suzanne Cluckey Communications

As 2014 fast approaches, April 8 looms larger and larger in the minds of ATM operators who need to upgrade their machines to Windows 7. On this date, Microsoft will cease to support its widely used Windows XP operating system for ATMs.

Much has been said about the consequences of not moving to the new operating system. And while plenty of accurate information on this topic has been passed around the global ATM market, there is also a good deal of talk that amounts to little more than conjecture, assumption and downright misinformation.

In a Dec. 12 webinar presented by KAL ATM Software and hosted by ATM Marketplace, Aravinda Korala, CEO of KAL and an authority on Windows 7 for ATMs, will present the straight story on the opportunities, obstacles, costs and consequences of updating an ATM fleet to a new Microsoft operating system — or not.

"The Roadmap for the Global Migration of the ATM Industry to Windows 7," will explore the complexities and cost implications involved in planning an OS upgrade.

The webinar also will share mitigating strategies for banks that do not plan to migrate to Windows 7 prior to the deadline, instead continuing to operate their machines on an unsupported Windows XP platform.

Korala will discuss five major items that operators of XP-based ATMs need to consider before migrating, as well as three major actions that non-migrating deployers should take.

Webinar attendees will learn about:

  • key features of Windows 7;
  • cost of migration to Windows 7;
  • rationale for upgrading to Windows 7, rather than the newer Windows 8 system;
  • ramifications for FIs of Microsoft's decision to end Windows XP support; and
  • the outlook for banks that plan to run Windows XP on their ATMs indefinitely.

Korala will also offer his analysis of results from the ATMIA Migration Readiness survey, which collected the views of 73 respondents with regard to their current situation vis-à-vis Windows 7 migration.

The webinar, scheduled for 10 a.m. EST on Dec. 12, is free and open to all. Attendees can register at ATM Marketplace.
