Webinar: 2015 ATM Software and Self-service Trends

In a June 30 event (now available for replay) KAL and ATM Marketplace took the wraps off the 2015 software trends report — and offered a detailed look at what the survey results indicate.

Of the financial institution executives who took the 2015 ATM and Self-Service Software Trends survey:

  • 90 percent said their institution was either considering, piloting or rolling out a branch transformation project;
  • 55 percent said they were planning to implement mobile ATM withdrawals via NFC in the near future; and
  • 69 percent said they were planning to implement at least some type of mobile-ATM integration within the next few years.

In the questionnaire for the first edition of the ATM Software Trends in 2007-2008, nobody would have even thought to ask such questions. Today, the entire ATM industry is asking them.

In fact, eight years after publishing the first software trends report, the ATM environment has changed to such an extent — and so quickly — that KAL ATM Software and ATM Marketplace, the co-developers of the 2015 ATM software trends guide, decided that it was time to rename the annual publication to include one of the fastest-moving trends in the financial services market today — self-service.

In a June 30 webinar, now available for online replay, KAL VP of Sales and Marketing Steve Hensley introduced the retitled report, "2015 ATM and Self-service Software Trends," now in its eighth edition.

The 40-minute presentation highlighted key findings from the guide, including those that emphasize the still-accelerating pace of change in the financial services industry, and the critical importance of the ATM and self-service devices in keeping financial institutions up to speed with consumer needs and expectations.

One factor driving the recent changes in financial services delivery is the mobile device, Hensley said. For the first time, the survey included questions about mobile banking in order to size up its impact.

As it turns out, that impact is considerable. Survey results showed that more than two-thirds of financial institutions are implementing — or planning to implement — mobile integration with ATMs in the near future. And nearly half said they expected to contactless mobile ATM withdrawals via NFC (chart, left).

Branch transformation and multi- or omnichannel banking played a front-and-center role in the 2015 report, with the introduction of several new questions on these topics in the annual survey. Nearly 90 percent of bank or credit union executives surveyed said that they currently have — or are formulating — a multi- or omnichannel strategy at their institution.

Answering a question about software selection for a multichannel environment, Hensley circled back to an emerging theme from the very first edition of the software trends guide — multivendor software:

"The technologies that you use in multivendor software — having HTML streams, and having transaction assets and so forth — can potentially be reused in other channels so there's a common look and feel there's common technologies ... so it's a great advantage having multivendor software drive all your self-service devices when you're trying to realize an omnichannel-multichannel strategy."

Hensley said he sees the use of self-service technologies growing in the future, and the pace of innovation in that segment only increasing as banks change the way they do business in order to please their customers.

"We're seeing in branch transformation projects the increased use of ATMs and ATM technology within the branch. And bank employees are becoming what we've talked about for a number of years; they really are becoming advisors, counselors, product experts — but the transactional stuff is being done by self-service.

"We think that we are just in the beginning stages of this transformation and the increasing acceptance of ATMs. Cash is here to stay. ATMs are here to stay. Their importance is not diminishing, but in fact increasing. And we're going to be doing more and more things on ATMs."
