February's finest: The ATM Marketplace Top 5

A look at the most-read stories of the last 29 days.

March 1, 2016 by Suzanne Cluckey — Owner, Suzanne Cluckey Communications

Cold cash and tepid corporate earnings. These were hot themes for ATM Marketplace readers during the freezing-cold days of February.

For the month, three of our top five reads addressed ATM operators' stock in trade — cash — including concerns about how best to manage it, and worries about just how much of it will be around to be managed in the future, as cashless payment competitors continue to crop up in the fintech sector.

ATM manufacturers serve as the bellwether for the future of cash and the ATM industry, so it comes as no surprise that features covering the full-year 2015 fortunes of NCR and Diebold garnered the greatest interest among readers during the month of February.

5) The humble ATM: So much more than a cash machine

This commentary by Kirsty Berry of Compass Plus, argues that deployers are missing great opportunities to add value at "one of the most underused channels."

Originally brought in to reduce congestion in branches and to prevent banks from having to extend their opening hours, the ATM has come a long way.

Its continued and predicted growth demonstrates how significant the channel has become for financial institutions and consumers across the globe.

4)A cashless society: What's in it for the UK?

This opinion piece advocating for a cashless U.K. did not go unchallenged. Look for a commentary in March that will give equal time to the opposing view.

The U.K. passed a major milestone on its journey to becoming a cashless society last year when it was reported that electronic payments overtook their paper counterparts for the first time]. According to the Payments Council, only 48 percent of payments made by British consumers and businesses in 2014 were in cash, down from 52 percent in 2013.

3) Is a cash contraction coming?

A commentary by Daryl Cornell ofTritonwarns of a possible $14 billion "cash dislocation" caused by ATM shut-offs after the Oct. 1 EMV liability shift.

Nationwide cash outage? Retail sales hiccup? GDP hit? Could the much-maligned retail ATM be the cause of a serious economic disruption later this year?

Apparently the Federal Reserve in Atlanta is concerned enough to have started asking the question on their own blog. Let’s look at the facts:

2)NCR finds something to love (or at least like) in 2015 revenues

For American companies that operate globally, 2015 was not a great year.

Still, NCR Corp. Chairman, President and CEO Bill Nuti would say that it was not such a bad year.

Which is essentially what he did say to financial analysts listening in on the company's Q4 earnings call this week.

1)Is Diebold's glass half empty ... or half full?

" ... 2015 was a challenging year in many respects."

It's a summation that might have been made by any number of ATM industry executives after the bumpy 12-month ride that was 2015. But it was Andy Mattes, president, CEO, and director of Diebold Inc. who said as much in his opening remarks during the company's earnings call last Thursday.

For a company in the midst of a major transformation and turnaround effort, 2015 full-year results were a mixed bag.
