Wincor Nixdorf will establish business in South Africa

January 27, 2011

PADERBORN, Germany — Wincor Nixdorf AG will establish a business in Johannesburg, South Africa, to sell ATMs, ATMmarketplace.com has learned.

Wincor Nixdorf has designed an ATM for deployment in South Africa’s rural areas, where there is a dearth of banking services for workers.

Independent ATM deployers are installing machines in remote locations to provide some banking services.

Asia Pacific/Africa is an important market for Wincor Nixdorf. During the fiscal year, which began, Oct. 1, 2009, and ended Sept. 30, 2010, the region contributed 15 percent to the manufacturer’s sales of 2.239 billion euros (U.S. $3.1 billion), according to the company's annual report.

Deployment of ATMs in South Africa is also important because Africa and the Middle East have the world’s highest ATM cash withdrawal rates.

Cardholders in Africa and the Middle East made an average of 3,914 cash withdrawals per ATM per month in 2009 compared with 1,631 in North America, 2,797 in Western Europe and 2,789 in Asia, according to Retail Banking Research.
