For the last 25 years, the business and technology models behind the ATM have remained virtually unchanged. Today's ATM systems use a simplistic "two-box" model, in which the ATM operates as either a "dumb" terminal connected to an intelligent host or as an intelligent client-machine connected to a slave host.
Each ATM must be updated individually, and any customization of the ATM is complex, time-consuming and expensive. But open standards are encouraging increased competitiveness in the ATM space as financial institutions look for alternative suppliers for their ATM software.
