U.S. Bank announced in December that it was partnering with San Diego-based Mitek to bring a remote capture billpay solution to its customers. Now the two have made good on their partnership with the introduction by U.S. Bank of Mobile Photo BillPay.
This service lets customers to set up a bill payment by taking a picture of the bill with a built-in camera on a smartpone or tablet. Patented Mitek billpay technology automatically extracts relevant information from the paper bill and populates fields in the U.S. Bank payment app. The user reviews and schedules the payment simply by clicking “Pay Now.”
The new U.S. Bank Mobile Photo BillPay feature is available to customers free of charge within U.S. Bank apps for iPhone, iPad and Android mobile devices. In an announcement, the FI said it was the first major bank to offer the service.
“We continue to leverage the capabilities of smartphones and use innovative ways of making banking more convenient for our customers,” said Niti Badarinath, senior vice president and leader of the mobile banking channel at U.S. Bank. “U.S. Bank customers were among the first in the nation to be able to use their mobile device to deposit checks. Now, we’ve made it really easy for our customers to enroll and use BillPay, add billers and pay bills whenever and wherever they choose.”
Recent research forecasts that 33 percent of U.S. consumers will adopt mobile billpay by 2018, resulting in the migration of 1.4 billion bills to the mobile channel.
