U.S. Bank is upgrading its ATM fleet to the Windows 7 operating system. Diebold Inc. is performing the upgrade — which represents the industry's first conversion to Windows 7, the company said in a news release. The upgrade will be complete in early 2014.
The upgrade anticipates the end of Microsoft support for Windows XP in April 2014. Without continuing security patches, the older operating system will put ATM deployers at risk of non-compliance with PCI DSS. Converting to Windows 7 will ensure that the U.S. Bank continues to support compliance.
"U.S. Bank is committed to delivering the highest level of functionality and protection for consumers at the ATM," said Jeannie Fichtel, U.S. Bank EVP and head of 24-hour and ATM banking. "By proactively implementing security upgrades such as Windows 7, we are offering our customers enhanced service that may be invisible to them, but which is particularly important to preserving the integrity of our network."
In addition to the operating system update, Diebold and U.S. Bank are working together to address upcoming PCI and EMV compliance deadlines. Diebold will install advanced encrypting PIN pads on U.S. Bank ATMs in accordance with PCI mandates, and as well as EMV card across the fleet, the company said.
"U.S. Bank was one of the first banks to comply with ADA regulations so it's no surprise that they are the first to initiate Windows 7 conversions," said Mychal D. Kempt, Diebold VP of North America operations. "One of our most progressive customers, the bank was the first to use our latest Agilis software, deploying a customized solution that enables efficiencies when implementing new services at the ATM."
Agilis features an open architecture that reduces the time and cost of implementing advanced transactions, Diebold said. Using the platform allows U.S. Bank to offer its customers advanced ATM functionalities such as image-enabled deposits, stamp purchases, statement printing, preference designation and charitable donations.
