Square concedes to need for cash

February 28, 2013

Mobile point-of-sale provider Square seems to have concluded that something was missing from its high-tech mobile POS business model — a low-tech component called "cash."

The company is now offering a cash register based around its Square Register solution for iPads. It's now bundled together with everything else a merchant needs — an iPad stand, cash drawer, two credit card readers and an optional receipt printer. All the merchant needs to supply are an iPad and a business idea.

Square's new "Business in a Box for Square Register" is intended to help businesses avoid the hassle of piecing together multiple hardware components from different manufacturers, manage contracts and pricing structures, and pay for software licensing and service plans, the company said. Instead, merchants can be up and running with Square Register in minutes, accepting credit cards, debit/ATM cards — and cash.

The cost for the package starts at $299 for a bundle without a receipt printer but can be customized by merchants. Additionally, there are no commitments for merchants and they may return the bundle for free within 30 days.
