South Africa gets first mobile banking unit

First National Bank of South Africa has launched the nation's first-ever mobile banking unit in an effort to extend banking services to customers in rural areas, according to a news report.

The mobile branch, which is housed in a repurposed shipping container, features an ATM, teller services and an ADT device where customers can make check deposits, purchase prepaid cards, open accounts and apply for loans.

According to FNB Chief Executive Lee-Ann Van Zyl, the bank constantly reviews ways to making banking more accessible to all South Africans.

"The first step for us was to think about an innovative way of delivering a full suite of banking facilities to rural communities in a convenient fashion," Lee-Ann Van Zyl, chief executive of FNB Points of Presence, said in the article. "Innovation is a big part of FNB's ethos and as a business we encourage everyone to play a role in coming up with ideas that not only challenge convention, but address customer needs and increase efficiency."
