SmartMetric touts EMV card with fingerprint reader

The card's smart chip will not work unless it matches the owner's fingerprint, making it useless if lost or stolen, the company says.

September 11, 2015

Nevada-based SmartMetric has developed a payment card with an built-in biometric fingerprint reader, according to a company news release.

The company said that its biometric card technology was designed to function with the EMV credit and debit card technology using a person's fingerprint to turn on the chip before a transaction.

Its EMV chip on the card will not work unless it matches the owner's fingerprint, which makes it useless for everyone else, the release said.

SmartMetric said that it took the company several years to introduce a fully functional fingerprint scanner inside a standard credit card.

The company will move to a larger manufacturing facility where it plans to produce approximately 250,000 of the biometric cards weekly, the release said.
