Security will be focus of ATMIA ATM Debit Summit

Security, identity theft, reaching unbanked consumers and the ins and outs of Plus' new ATM operator rules are slated for discussion at ATMIA's September ATM Debit Summit in Scottsdale, Ariz.

August 8, 2005

Security, identity-theft education and how to reach unbanked and underbanked consumers are hot issues. And they're all slated topics at September's ATM Industry Association ATM Debit Summit in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Although some presentations are still being finalized, a complete list of speakers and topics is available on the association's Web site.

Speakers include Ariana-Michele Moore of Celent Communications LLC, Bill Dunn of Tranax Technologies, Doug Sholes of Triton Systems of Delaware Inc., Lyle Elias of the Value Payment Network, Lori Breitzke of RBS Lynk Inc., Jennifer Tescher of The Center for Financial Services Innovation, Mike Urban of Fair Isaac Corp., Jorge Fernandez of Capture Systems and ATMIA's new training officer, Laura Ralston.

Security: A big focus for 2005

Ralston will host a workshop Sept. 14 about industry best practices, highlighting the work of ATMIA's Global ATM Security Alliance.

"Security is going to be a big focus of the conference," Ralston said. "GASA has been working for a while on developing their best practices manuals, and so the workshop will be more of an overview of each of those best practices," which include cardholder and card security, ATM physical PIN and encryption security, ATM transactions and cyber security, connectivity security, and cash security.

Beyond security, training for independent sales organizations also will be a focus. A four-hour ISO training workshop Sept. 14 will include presenters from ACCEL-Exchange, Automated Financial LLC, Citizens Financial Group, RBS Lynk Inc., First Data's Star Systems, Palm Desert National Bank, Pueblo Bank & Trust and the Pulse EFT Association.

The workshop will focus on helping ISOs prepare for the new Plus ATM Operator Agreement Rules, which take effect in November. "Most networks will be presenting during this workshop," said Lana Harmelink, ATMIA's international director of operations. "The networks will be providing packets at the end to the attendees based on their individual requirements."

"This is a first - having the networks work together on educating the industry," she added. "It will get the industry involved in protecting their business."

ATMIA working to extend global reach

From West to East, ATMIA is bringing industry leaders together to talk ATMs and the future of the industry, said ATMIA chief executive Mike Lee. "Networking, face-to-face industry and committee meetings, sharing information and ideas, and staying current with cutting-edge technology through our exhibitions," are the global goals for the association's conferences, Lee said.

The West conference is just one part - it's the kickoff of ATMIA's North American shows. ATMIA's East conference is set for Feb. 15-17 in Orlando, Fla.

"Our aim is to have 1,000 loyal members by 2008," he added. "Next year we will complete our geographical expansion by launching ATMIA Latin America and ATMIA Middle East. Thereafter we will concentrate on extending our industry committee work for our new chapters."

ATMIA president Tom Harper said the association's conferences offer the industry a unique opportunity to mix and mingle. "ATMIA conferences are incredible networking events. I hear comments at every show from people who are so busy with appointments and meetings that they barely have time to eat."
