Security expert: Independent ATMs pose security concerns

November 22, 2009

Robert Siciliano, a Boston-based security expert for identity-theft-protection company Intelius, says retail or independently owned ATMs are not so secure.According to an article in The Boston Globe, Siciliano, who bought his own ATM as part of an experiment, says he hired a hacker who was able to gain access to hundreds of credit and debit card numbers after a few short strokes of some ATM keys.
There were more than 1,000 numbers recorded in the machine that Siciliano and his colleague printed out. ATMs like that are resold all the time, Siciliano said. They are particularly easy to find in big cities and can be found from time to time in the Boston area.
