Romania's ATM numbers shrink even as cash demand grows

August 10, 2018

Banks in Romanian have been downsizing their ATM fleets, even as ATM transaction volumes are increasing across the country.

According to a report by Business Review, Romania's ATM network has shrunk 5.2 percent — from 11,669 to 11,058 over the past 18 months — as banks have sought to move more retail activities online.

At the same time, the number of ATM transactions quarterly in Romania has increased from 61 million to 63 million, and the number of active bankcards has grown 11.4 percent, to 12.8 million, the report said.

Transaction numbers are likely to continue to increase, according to Business Review. From last June to this, currency in circulation rose 11.8 percent, continuing a years-long pattern of double-digit growth.
