NCR, SunTrust slapped with ATM patent suit

May 27, 2014

San Diego, Calif.-based Capital Security Systems Inc. filed a lawsuit on Monday in federal court claiming that NCR Corp. and SunTrust Banks are using patented technologies owned by CSS.

CSS claims a total of four patents-in-suit. Two of these are:

  • 5,897,625 Patent, “Automated Document Cashing System,” which covers systems and methods for depositing checks, cashing checks, depositing cash and paying bills at an ATM without an envelope.
  • 7,653,600 Patent, “Automated Document Cashing System,” an automated machine for depositing checks without an envelope where the legal amount recognition, the courtesy amount recognition, and the signature lines of the checks are reviewed.

The full text of the complaint is available online.

Capital Security Systems Inc. previously has taken action against banks that include Wells Fargo, BBVA Compass and JP Morgan Chase — all parties settled.

CSS also tangled with Diebold Inc. in a countersuit brought by the manufacturer seeking to have the CSS patents invalidated. That suit was settled, as well.
