BEIJING - NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR) has installed the first drive-up ATM for Bank of Communications at Zhengzhou.
NCR introduced the Personas 90e drive-up ATM to the Chinese market at the Beijing Banking Exhibition in September 2003.
The first Personas 90e to be deployed is situated in a petrol station at the junction of Zi Jin Shan Lu and Cheng Bei Lu of Zhengzhou, Henan province. With a population of 2.5 million people, Zhengzhou has more than 300,000 privately owned cars.
"We deployed the NCR drive-up ATM to make the most up-to-date self-service technology available to our customers, especially drivers who need more convenient and faster service," said Guan Xingshe, vice president of Bank of Communications' Zhengzhou branch. "We have received a lot of positive feedback and are considering adopting proactive plans in response to market demand."
In 2003, car sales in China reached 1.97 million, making it the fourth largest car market in the world, after the United States, Japan and Germany. Global Insight Inc. has predicted that by 2013 China will become the second largest car market in the world.
"Drive-up ATMs are already popular in other parts of the world," said CK Chan, vice president of NCR's Financial Solutions Division in China. "China's economy has seen very rapid development in recent years, and car usage has increased at the same time. Self-service has also matured in big cities, and we are seeing increasing numbers of ATMs in off-site locations. The introduction of drive-up ATMs has a significant role to play in this regard."
The NCR Personas 90e is a full-function ATM, enabling cash withdrawal, cash and check deposit, bill payment, bill inquiry and other functions. It can also be configured to accept multicurrency deposits.
