NCR expects 10% increase in ATMs in Asian market

June 14, 2009

Malaysia Star: ATM installations are expected to grow by more than 10 percent in Malaysia this year, according to NCR Malaysia, despite the fact that many banks in the country are cutting back on their expenditures. NCR Malaysia sales director Kirk Samson says the country's 8,500 ATMs already include a good mix of intelligent-deposit machines — and that growth is expected to continue.

"As banks still want to promote their products and boost revenue, they have decided to do so via the ATMs. Housing loans, personal loans and credit cards are some of the products that banks are now aggressively promoting through ATMs," he said.

According to Bank Negara's statistics, there were 6,147 ATMs in 2006 and 7,156 ATMs in 2007. ATM cards for last year stood at 24 million, compared with 19 million in 2006 and 22 million in 2007.
