Miserly power use makes Diebold ATM ideal for emerging markets

March 17, 2014

Imagine an ATM that requires no more electricity to operate than an ordinary incandescent light bulb — possibly even less than that.

That's all it takes to power the Diebold 429 ATM, according to a news release from Diebold Inc. The machine operates on as little as 70 watts of power, consuming up to 40 percent less energy than other models. As a result, the company calls it "The World's Greenest ATM."

The Diebold 429 incorporates a smart power management system that continuously monitors power needed to operate and perform transactions. The system automatically decides whether to draw power from the electrical grid or the machine's internal battery. As a third option, the ATM can even use solar energy.

Dispenser control technology works with the smart power system to ensure that modules operate on minimal electricity. While modules in a typical ATM operate at 48 volts to dispense notes at a standard rate, those in the Diebold 429 operate at 24 volts — while maintaining the same dispensing rate. This further decreases energy draw by reducing the need for cooling fans.

Diebold 429 ATMThe Diebold 429 offers a solution for emerging markets with limited energy infrastructure, the company said. Currently, the machine is available in India, where power outages typically occur more than 100 times per week.

India's Bank of Baroda will install 2,100 of the machines in rural markets that it could not previously serve. A fleet of that size can save enough energy to serve more than 1,200 Indian households annually, Diebold said.

"Offering a variety of power options maximizes terminal uptime and delivers convenience to consumers," said Frank A. Natoli Jr., EVP and chief innovation officer at Diebold. "The low power consumption of the Diebold 429 ATM is unprecedented across the globe ... The 429 will serve as a platform for power consumption and energy conservation in our future ATM designs, enabling more opportunities to incorporate optional solar panels and backup batteries."
