Illinois offers debit for unemployment benefits
December 27, 2006
The (Springfield, Ill.) State Journal-Register:Unemployment recipients in Indiana will be required to use a debit-card system for benefits by the end of January. In Illinois, it will remain optional. The Visa-branded cards, labeled "SecurePay," are being produced and processed through an existing contract with Illinois National Bank of Springfield. The states in December joined about a dozen others by switching to debit cards as an alternative to direct-deposit and traditional paper to cut costs and streamline benefits processing.
