March 17, 2014

Taiwanese display card developer SmartDisplayer Technology Co. Ltd. has announced its next-generation smart card — iCard4. The card secures both card-present transactions and card-not-present transactions, the company said in a news release.

icard4ICard4 is an interconnected smartcard with the payment chip connected to the display’s application-specific integrated circuit.

Features of the card include:

  • communication with smartphones via NFC interface;
  • creation of one-time passwords and OATH challenge response algorithms;
  • payment chip locking and unlocking;
  • card number display via PIN;
  • on-card PIN change; and
  • transaction log and account balance display from payment chip.

According to SmartDisplayer, iCard4 has the capability to integrate all types of EMV chips, NFC protocols, all available OTP algorithms, and tactile keypads with its e-paper display. The card supports various OTP algorithms, including OATH, CAP, SM3, PBOC, and CodeSure.

"It is like a PC with input, output, microprocessor, memory, power supply and communication interface — but on an ISO-compliant card," SmartDisplayer Technology CEO George Ou said in the announcement. "That is why we call it a 'PC-like' smart card."
