HSBC rolls out next-gen ATMs across Malta

HSBC is well underway with its project to upgrade all of its ATMs in the European island nation of Malta.

An article by Malta Today said that all HSBC branch ATMs are to be replaced by the end of this year, while the bank's offsite machines will be replaced by the end of 2013.

So far, 24 new Wincor Nixdorf next-gen ATMs have been installed, representing 30 percent of the entire HSBC fleet on Malta. All of the new machines feature automated deposit technology. The machines count deposited notes and provide a receipt for the total number and value of the transaction. Check deposit receipts include an image of the just-deposited check.

"Among the advanced Express Banking functionalities, the upgraded ATMs offer real-time processing of cash deposits without the need of a deposit envelope, with the result that cash deposits are instantly credited in one's account," HSBC Malta head of retail banking and wealth management, Paul Steel, said in the Malta Today story. "The deposit envelope is also not required when depositing cheques."

The €3 million ($3,655,197) ATM upgrade is a component of an ongoing €8 million ($9,747,194) upgrade project involving HSBC branches in nine Maltese cities.
