Heartland Payment Systems is now offering a comprehensive warranty that protects businesses from losses in the event of a payment card breach, according to a press release. Coverage is available to Heartland Secure customers that process payments through a Heartland Secure-certified device.
The Heartland Secure solution combines EMV with proprietary encryption technology and tokenization for card-present transactions. The warranty promises that if encryption fails on a Heartland Secure machine, the company will reimburse the merchant for compliance fines, fees and any assessments the merchant must pay to the card brands, issuing banks and acquiring banks.
"Many small business owners aren't aware of the magnitude of data security breaches or the potential liabilities lurking around the corner. Damage to a company's reputation can be catastrophic, and the fines can be overwhelming," Michael English, executive director of product development at Heartland, said in the release. Heartland would know, having been the victim of a massive and costly data breach in 2008.
The warranty is offered at no charge to Heartland Secure merchants in the first year and can be extended thereafter for $8.33 per month per card entry device.
